The little girl’s sixth birthday was supposed to take place at the end of October. Instead of preparing for the occasion, her grandfather, Anatoliy Chumniy, was crying beside her body, recovered from the rubble of a residential building in Zaporizhzhia, southern Ukraine. She lay inside a white body bag. The war had interrupted a life before her family could celebrate another year of it.
