On Monday, October 5, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to American scientist Karl Deisseroth and German scientists Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries that helped create optogenetics, a technique capable of activating or silencing specific nerve cells using light. The recognition goes far beyond an academic achievement: it points to a change in the way medicine is beginning to approach the human brain.
