On Tuesday, October 6, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Belgian physicist Francis Halzen for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. The news might seem destined only for physicists. But there is a much more human story hidden inside that cubic kilometre of ice at the South Pole.
