When Disaster Does Not Come Alone
Earthquakes, extreme winds and wildfires show that preparedness and adaptation increasingly determine the scale of modern crises

In less than a week, different parts of the world were struck by very different disasters. A powerful earthquake hit southern Japan, destructive windstorms caused deaths and widespread disruption in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, while wildfires once again spread across parts of France and Spain. At first glance, these events appear unrelated. Viewed together, however, they reveal a common reality: modern disasters rarely end when the natural event itself is over.
