On September 11, 2001, four hijacked commercial airplanes were turned into weapons against the United States. Two struck the World Trade Center towers in New York, one hit the Pentagon, and another crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, including citizens of the United States and more than 90 other countries.
